PressTV/ 28,000 birds slaughtered in Netherlands over bird flu

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- Some 28,000 birds have been culled at a poultry farm in the Netherlands following the discovery of a fresh outbreak of the bird flu.

The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs said in a statement on Sunday that the discovery took place at a farm in the town of Zoeterwoude.

The farm is located 12 miles northeast of the capital city of the province of South Holland, The Hague, which is home to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“The birds are infected with the H5 variant of the flu but it’s not yet known whether of the highly pathogenic variety or not,” the ministry said in its statement.

Further tests on the birds are underway and results are expected on Monday.

Authorities say four other poultry farms are currently being investigated for the bird flu.

Earlier this month, the avian influenza was discovered at a farm in the Dutch village of Ter Aar in South Holland Province. Reports say about 43,000 chickens at the farm were slaughtered.

Tens of thousands of birds infected with the H5N8 bird flu strain have been slaughtered in the Netherlands in recent weeks.

The recent outbreaks have also affected Britain and Germany.

Germany recently detected cases of the H5N8 bird flu strain, which had never been reported in Europe.
