SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- Hundreds of people were arrested across the US on Tuesday night for protesting against a grand jury’s decision to exonerate a white police officer after he shot dead a black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, last summer.

About 150 people were arrested in Los Angeles, California, during demonstrations that lasted all night, officer Sally Madera of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said early Wednesday.

The demonstrators frequently chanted “hands up, don’t shoot” in memory of Michael Brown, the 18-year-old who was shot to death by police officer Darren Wilson on August 9 in Ferguson, Missouri.

Mass protests also erupted in New York, Washington. DC, Oakland, Seattle, Boston and dozens of other cities across the US, as well as Ferguson itself.

Over 40 people were arrested in Ferguson amid high tensions in the city’s embattled streets. Over 2,000 National Guard troops have been deployed to Ferguson to help local law enforcement.

Massachusetts State Police said 51 people were arrested in Boston late Tuesday night as hundreds of protesters marched through the city’s streets.

Atlanta Police said a total of 24 people were arrested as protesters there clashed with police and disrupted traffic.

Brown’s death on August 9 sparked weeks of protest in Ferguson and further fueled racial tensions between the majority-black Ferguson community and the majority-white city government and police.

“The United States is a hypocritical, white settler society where Anglo Americans practice apartheid and eugenics, in particular against African Americans,” said Randy Short, a researcher and historian in Washington and a member of the Black Autonomy Network Community Organization.

“The Dred Scott decision (1857) that declared no black could ever be a citizen of the United States… is essentially the guiding spirit of the legal system in the United States,” Dr. Short told Press TV on Wednesday.
