PressTV/ Obama to discuss Ferguson issue in cabinet meeting

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- US President Barack Obama will meet with his cabinet members and civil rights leaders to discuss protests against a Missouri grand jury decision in the case of the death of Michael Brown.

The White House said on Sunday Obama’s meeting will include a discussion of a review of federal programs that provide military-style equipment to law enforcement agencies.

Following the fatal police shooting of the unarmed African American teenager in Ferguson in August, Obama ordered the review.

The White House said the president will also meet with young civil rights leaders to discuss the challenges posed by “mistrust between law enforcement and communities of color.”

A day after white police officer Darren Wilson, who shot and killed Brown on August 9, resigned from the police force, Mayor James Knowles announced to create a scholarship program to recruit African American candidates to the Police Department.

Knowles said he hoped the program would create a police force that is “more reflective of the demographics in Ferguson.”

The attorney for Michael Brown’s family says they are still considering court action such as a wrongful death lawsuit, and advocating legislation that would require more supervision over police officers on duty.
