Prince William’s historic five-day Middle East tour

SHAFAQNA – The Duke of Cambridge’s five-day Middle East tour was historic. He traveled to Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories during a period of increased tension in the region.

Prince William arrived in Jordan on Sunday on the first stop of a five-day Middle East tour that will make him the first British royal to pay an official visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories.

The Jordanian prince then drove William to a technology-focused event for young people linked to the Crown Prince Foundation, CNN reported.

According to BBC,On Monday, Prince William and Jordan’s Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah visited the military base of the Quick Reaction Force – formed with British military support – in northern Jordan to meet members of the country’s armed forces.

They also visited the Dar Namah Centre, part of a charitable project set up by Jordan’s Princess Taghrid to help orphaned girls establish their own livelihoods after they turn 18.

The Duke of Cambridge has arrived in Tel Aviv as part of a historic five-day Middle East tour, on which he will become the first British royal to make an official visit to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

On Tuesday, The Duke of Cambridge was in Jerusalem and met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara at their residence. At the request of the UK government, the duke is due to meet Israel’s prime minister, which is seen as hugely significant for UK-Israel relations.

Prince William visited the Hall of Names at Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Jerusalem and took part in a ceremony to commemorate the six million Jews killed by the Nazis.

He will also pay his respects at the tomb of Princess Alice of Greece – William’s great-grandmother and the mother of the Duke of Edinburgh – at the Russian Orthodox Church of St Mary Magdalene on the Mount of Olives.

He is also due to meet the Palestinian Authority president, Mahmoud Abbas, in Ramallah in the West Bank.

In Ramallah the duke is due to attend events focusing on issues facing refugee communities and providing “opportunities to celebrate Palestinian culture, music and food”.

Prince William’s visit comes during a period of increased tension in the region. More than 100 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire during recent protests at the border with Gaza, The Guardian reported.

The Duke of Cambridge visited at the request of the British government. It was his first official trip to the region. Four years in the planning, the trip originally was to be made by Prince Harry, but his wedding to Meghan Markle created a scheduling problem, according to the British news media.
