Reports on Iran’s military presence in Iraq rejected by Iraqi top commander

SHAFAQNA – A top commander of Iraq’s volunteer forces categorically rejected reports on Iran’s military presence in Iraq, reiterating that Iran is only provides advisors and weapons for Iraq.

“Iran’s presence in Iraq is solely confined to its advisors and providing weapons for Iraq,” Iran-based Arabic-language al-Alam news channel quoted Secretary General of Badr Organization Hadi al-Ameri as saying.

He also said all Iraqi officials have acknowledged that ‘There would be no Iraq, if it was not Iran’s support. We appreciate Iran’s assistance which has good experiences in fighting ISIL.”

Iranian martyrs in Iraq, including Brigadier General Hamid Naghavi were advisors not combatants, he said.

He also rejected reports on Iranian flights and planes in shared borders with Iraq, and said, “This is one of the US lies. We do not need Iranian planes. We would declare if we needed.”

He then referred to Iranian weapons in Iraq, and said, ‘There are Iranian weapons in Iraq. Iraqi ministries are directly buying weapons from Iran. Iran is not providing common people with weapons, but it gives them to interior ministry and ministry of defense through official and legal channels.”
