Russian Orthodox Church Spokesman Supports Allowing Hijabs in Schools

SHAFAQNA- Russian Orthodox Church spokesman Vsevolod Chaplin supports the idea that children should be allowed to wear hijabs in Russian schools, news agency Interfax reported Thursday.

All believers have the right to wear their religious attire in public places, Chaplin said. It is important that schools should adapt to different mindsets.

Some parts of the country currently prohibit schoolchildren from wearing hijabs, and Russia s Supreme Court on Feb. 11 will decide whether such bans are lawful.

Russia s grand mufti, Ravil Gainutdinov, recently implored President Vladimir Putin in a public letter to defend the rights of Muslim girls to wear hijabs in schools and universities, saying that such attire is more a sign of modesty than religious zeal.
