Six Kids Detained in Bahrain

SHAFAQNA- A Bahraini human rights body said the ruling Al Khalifa regime has arrested 17 citizens, including 6 children, in the past few days.

In its weekly report, the Bahrain Center for Human Rights said that from February 20 to 26, regime forces took 17 nationals, including six kids, into custody.

Only one of those detained has since been released, it said, al-Alam news network reported.

The report added that in the said period, the Persian Gulf Arab country’s judiciary has revoked the citizenship of 8 Bahraini prisoners and sentenced two to life in prison for taking part in peaceful anti-regime protests.

The report also documented widespread crackdown on peaceful demonstrations in Bahrain in the past week.

The demonstrations are part of an uprising that began in Bahrain on February 14, 2011. Protesters initially called for political reforms and a constitutional monarchy. However, the demand later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.

Scores of people have been killed in the crackdown and security forces have arrested hundreds including doctors and nurses. Dozens of demonstrators have also been sentenced to jail terms for attending street protests.

International human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the Manama regime for its excessive use of force against peaceful protesters.

Troops from Saudi Arabia have been also deployed to Bahrain to assist in its crackdown on the peaceful protesters.
