Snapchat eliminates ‘Best Friends’ feature only to be restored

SHAFAQNA – Snapchat users and investors were shocked when the photo messaging application developed by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown, decided to remove its ‘best friends’ feature, which showed the most repeatedly contacted individuals. The company also started a service within the service called ‘Discover’ by which users can see curated content from a number of sources together with CNN, ESPN, and Cosmo.

“Social media companies tell us what to read based on what’s most recent or most popular. We see it differently. We count on editors and artists, not clicks and shares, to determine what’s important”, said Snapchat in a blog post.

Despite all the positive benefits of the update, the removal of the ‘Best Friends’, feature was the major topic of discussion. Teenagers were the most disgusted by the update.

CEO and Founder of Snapchat Spiegel pointed out that there was a need to hide some higher-profile friends of the network, so this is absolutely something that should be considered. Once restored, the focus can again shift to the great features that the app and service will be delivering from beginning to end. The discover portion, together with the increased functionality and streamlined UI all make a really great messaging and photo sharing service.

However, this could have some long-term impacts for the service. Teenagers reacted a lot as they could no longer secretly stalk their partners or friends, however evidently Snapchat is making efforts to really develop itself as a product and strengthen itself in technological history.

Spiegel said that the best friends feature was removed because a few higher-profile friends wanted to keep their usernames confidential, though he assured it would eventually be restored in a new form.
