Taliban are Trained in Pakistan: Alexander

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)

The Canadian Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Chris Alexander, who is in Afghanistan to participate in the inauguration ceremony of the country’s new president-elect tomorrow, has asked Pakistan to stop supporting insurgency, stating that there are no doubts of Pakistan being a terrorist safe-haven.

“Today, Canada and most of the countries around the world know why there is still insecurity and instability in Afghanistan,” Alexander said in an interview with TOLOnews. “Taliban are trained in Pakistan’s Baluchistan, Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and some parts Karachi.”

He stressed that “it is not acceptable for people, non-governmental organizations or government organizations to support terrorist groups like the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.”

“Canada has put Taliban in the black list of terrorists and it is known to all that training centers and weapons are provided for the terrorists in Quetta, Miramshah and other parts of the country.”

Alexander expressed optimism about the National Unity Government and the partnership between President-elect Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Chief Executive to-be Abdullah Abdullah, pledging Canada’s support for the new government.

“I worked closely with both when I was in Kabul during that time, Abdullah was the foreign minister and Ghani was the minister of finance. I want to discuss with each of them their priorities, foreign policy and approaches to the challenges in the region,” he said, emphasizing that Canada will continue its support to Afghanistan and provide the country with an annual $90 million aid.

Canada has been among one of the most consistent western allies of Afghanistan. The country has contributed about $2 billion in the past13 years.

High-ranking officials from the region and the world have travelled to Afghanistan to take part in the president-elect’s inauguration ceremony on Monday in Kabul, the capital of the nation.
