Telegraph/ Typhoon barrels down Japanese coast

SHAFAQNA (International Shia News Association) – Japan is braced for destructive winds and huge waves as a powerful typhoon moved on Saturday towards the southern islands of Okinawa.

Television footage showed damaged storefronts and trees toppled as winds picked up in the Okinawan capital of Naha. Meanwhile, flights were cancelled and road transportation halted.

The death toll from the powerful typhoon has risen to nine so far, according to Kyodo News agency.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warns that high seas, dangerous storm surges and torrential rainfall will likely lead to flooding and mudslides.

Typhoon Vongfong is expected to reach Okinawa on Sunday, with winds of up to 100 miles per hour, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
