The Grand Ayatollah Shobairi’s Fatwa about incurable illnesses

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Shobairi Zanjani answered a question about incurable illnesses.

Question: In cases of incurable illnesses such as progressive cancer, or illnesses where patient’s death is certain, if the doctor is facing two alternatives where one is to continue the treatment in a way that increases patient’s life a bit longer, but the patient suffers a lot; and the second method is that patient lives shorter but suffers less; in such conditions if the patient chooses the second method, is the doctor allowed to authorize it?

The Grand Ayatollah Shobairi: The second method cannot be authorized unless the pain and suffering of the patient is at a level that makes it essential for that method to be adopted.
