SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Sistani answered a question about the use of leather furniture in non-Islamic countries.
Question: In rented a house in a non-Islamic country I have leather furniture which I am not sure that its leather is from an Islamic country or not, what is the ruling regarding this, is it clean or not, what is the ruling if it is touched with wet hand?
The Grand Ayatollah Sistani: If you are not certain that it is natural leather, it is clean and there is no need to search further. If you are certain that it is natural leather and if you do not suppose it is from an Islamic country or from an animal that is clean (according to Islamic rule), such leather is unclean (Najes), and if it is not like that, it is clean.
