SHAFAQNA- Alkafeel: The Supreme Religious Authority pointed out that one of the serious societal phenomena that threatens the social system in the country is slander, fabricating news and their dissemination without investigation. Indicating that when a person speaks or writes the truth sincerely, he will be the pioneer of good and reform of the society, but if he used means of deceit, lies and forgery, he will be then the pioneer of evil.

These were the important points stated in the second sermon of Friday prayer of the 25th of Jumada I 1440 AH, corresponding to February 1, 2019, which was held in the holy shrine of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) and was led by his eminence Sheikh Abd al-Mahdi al-Karbala’i, in which he states:
Brethren, we are still talking about societal phenomena that threaten the moral system and social coexistence.
One of our basic functions is to show the Islamic teachings and also to highlight these phenomena that threaten the moral system and the social coexistence to fortify society when some social phenomena threaten its existence, social cohesion and moral system.
Among these social phenomena is slander, fabrication of the news and their dissemination falsely without investigation.
It is known that the basic and the most important tool of expression is the tongue, which we use, first, to introduce scientific and educational methods and cultures. secondly, for the dissemination transfer of the scientific and cognitive curricula and cultures among the human beings, and thirdly, transfer the historical facts, biographies of the great personalities to learn from it, as well as the transfer of history of previous events and nations. The tongue is also a mean of understanding, dialogue and discussion.
The pen, or the writing, is another form of communication, as it is a second tongue that can be used for the good or for the evil, especially with the dissemination of the social media use.
Also, among the social necessities that helps us to carry out the functions of life, and achieve the life goals is the stability, happiness and the social and cultural coexistence. The stability of the society is achieved by the synergy, understanding, dialogue, solidarity and cooperation based on the mutual trust among members of society.
What is the relationship between these two matters?
The tongue or the pen, are the key to convey and reveal the facts in history and in the present. Thus, if they are revealing sincerely the truths, facts, feelings and emotions, they are then messengers of the good in the society, and will lead to the stability and happiness of the community.
But if it is lying using the means of deception, deceit, forgery and fabrication, whether in conveying the scientific or historical facts, then it is the pioneer of evil and the messenger of corruption and depreciation. Many Quranic verses and narrations stress on this point and highlight that most people in the hellfire are there because of their tongues, such as the following narration: “People will be thrown on their faces into the Hell on account of their tongues.”
Brethren, among the phenomena that have spread in the recent period is the fabrication, falsification, slander and deception. Especially in this era where satellite channels are watched by millions and the dissemination of fake news is done in high speed via Internet, making it a more serious societal phenomenon that has a serious impact. Therefore, we must be careful, cautious and vigilant when using the social media.
Now, we must know the reasons of such phenomenon:
First is the envy, whether between individuals or entities and institutions. The envy drives people to fabrication, forgery and slander so others lose their superiority and advantages and weaken their morals and qualities.
The Quranic verses tell us about the story of Abel and Cain, so we learn the lesson about envy. Same thing with the story of the prophet Joseph (Yusuf) and his brothers; sons of the Prophet Jacob (Ya’coob). Many of the Prophets, Imams and righteous ones are killed and harmed because of envy. {Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty?} (4:54).
The second reason is the hatred and hostility to others that drives to attributing false things to innocent people.
The third reason is the greed for money, position or influence, or to flatter those in power.
Among the reasons is partisanism, fanaticism of religion, sect, tribe or else.
Also the misgivings is among the reasons, as many of us interpret wrongly the words, behavior and conduct of others. Thus, misunderstanding others can lead to falsification also.
Another reason is the haste and hurry to judge things. When we read posts on the social media or others, films or articles, many of us believe in their authenticity without verification or investigation, and with a click we share them, contributing to the dissemination of the falsehood, lies, falsification, misinformation and slander of people and bodies, especially with regard of scholars and men of religion.
After mentioning the reasons, let’s see the view of Islam in accusing people of falsehood and slandering innocent people. The Almighty Allah says in the Holy Quran: {When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allah, tremendous.} (24:15).
Many of us enjoy sharing these false news and articles, especially those related to the scholars and men of religion. How many of us hasten to share these writings and conversations? It is a great crime and a great sin that we share information that are falsified and fabricated without looking for the proof and verification, and without reasoning with the heart, conscience, morals and laws that prevail is such matters.
The Almighty warns in the holy verse about thinking that the dissemination of falsehood is insignificant is indeed enormous matter: {Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know.} (24:19).
Why is it so?
First: It is a kind of injustice towards the innocent people.
Second: This causes a distortion and attenuation of this personality, especially when we are speaking about scholars and men of religion. This will alienate people and keep them away from this personality. And this aversion will result to depriving the community of the science of these personalities.
In addition to the moral and psychological abuse that will be experienced by this man to whom these behaviors and actions are attributed, while he is innocent. This person may live many years of torment and psychological suffering, the Almighty said: {And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned have certainly born upon themselves a slander and manifest sin.} (33:54).
An innocent man who is accused of doing something wrong and the most dangerous thing that we contribute without intention in the dissemination of lies, falsehoods and slander of the scholars and men of religion leading us to serious consequences which have harmful effects in this world and the Hereafter.
Therefore, we have to cautious and reflect and investigate before we speak, as stated in the narrations that the believer must take his time to consult his heart before speaking, if there is a good in talking, he speaks, but if there is a harm or abuse, he stays quiet.
Same thing when writing and sharing it through the social media, we have to be very careful as the information can widespread. That is why we called a community phenomenon.
We ask the Almighty to bestow upon us success and to help us avoid such matters. And, the latest of our prayers is; praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, and Prayers and Allah‘s Peace be upon Mohammad and his pure and virtuous lineage.
