UK Prime Minister Arrives in Kabul to Meet Afghan Leaders: Reports

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)

UK Prime Minister David Cameron arrived in Afghanistan on Friday with an unannounced visit to meet with the country’s new unity government.

Cameron is reported to have arrived at the presidential palace in the Afghan capital of Kabul early Friday, according to Reuters.

His visit comes shortly after new Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai was sworn into office on September 29.

After the June 14 run-off election between Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani, the former suspected fraud in the election and said he would form his own government, regardless of the announced results.

Later in August, an audit of the ballot was brokered by US Secretary of State John Kerry.

The audit was completed on September 5. Finally, Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah signed a power-sharing agreement, following weeks of negotiations.

According to the deal, Ghani was to become the president, while Abdullah was to occupy the newly-created post of chief executive, similar to the role of prime minister.

The UK prime minister is the first major leader from the West to visit Afghanistan after an election stalemate was resolved.
