SHAFAQNA – Despite language barriers, Vera Verinak, a Ukrainian woman who accepted Islam 17 years ago, has become the first Muslim woman in Ukraine to completely memorize the holy Quran. After several years of learning, Vera, 35 years old, whose Muslim name is Iman, meaning faith, accomplished her dream and became the first Ukrainian woman to learn the Quran by heart. “I started by learning the Arabic language, so I used to write the verses and translate their meanings to understand and memorize them,” Vera told AlJazeera.
“This took me a long time, as I was a university student, before getting busy with work, marriage, and children,” she said. She said that the Islamic center in Kiev contributed to her success in learning Arabic and the Holy Quran. “After learning Arabic, the Islamic cultural center in Kiev put a schedule to help me memorize the Qur’an, which helped me to memorize it within only nine months,” she said. The Muslim mother said she would like to teach the Holy Quran as well as be fully engaged in spreading the true image of and teachings of Islam among non-Muslims.
