US closes embassy in Yemen to public

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) – The United States is closing its embassy in Yemeni capital Sanaa to the public until further notice. A statement by the embassy said: The decision was made “out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting the embassy.”

The statement said the embassy was “unable to provide routine consular services and will have very limited ability to assist with emergency cases involving U.S. citizens” given the government resignations and “the ongoing security concerns.”

A US security official who spoke on condition of anonymity told Reuters in Washington the most likely reason the Yemen embassy was closed to the public was that it was surrounded by “chaos.”
