Who buried the martyrs of Karbala? (Part One)

SHAFAQNA – The historians have differences of opinion about the circumstances in which the martyrs of Karbala were buried. Some believe that the bodies of the martyrs were buried by Bani Assad. Sheikh Mofeed wrote: “A group of Bani Assad who were in Qazerieh, came near the holy body of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions, prayed for them and buried them. Therefore, Imam Hussain (AS) was buried in the same place as his current holy shrine is located and his son Ali Asqar (AS) was buried near his leg. For other martyrs (from his family and companions who fell around him) a grave was made lower than the Imam’s leg and all were buried there. Abbas ibn Ali (AS) was buried in the same place he was martyred at, on the way to Qazerieh [1].

According to this version, Imam Sajjad (AS) did not bury the bodies of the martyrs. Also Ahlul Bait (AS) had not been moved towards Kufa and Shaam. Some others believe that Imam Sajjad (AS) and Bani Assad buried the bodies of the martyrs. The day after Ashura, when Omar Saad’s army left, some of them (from Bani Assad) came to bury the martyrs [2]. Because they could not identify the bodies, they were puzzled, at that time, Imam Sajjad (AS) came and identified the bodies one by one and they helped Imam Sajjad (AS) to bury the martyrs and attain honours for themselves [3].
