Who must pay Fitriyah? The Grand Ayatollah Sistani’s Fatwa

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Sistani answered a question about those who are eligible for Fitriyah (Zakatul-Fitr).

Question: Who must pay Fitriyah?

The Grand Ayatollah Sistani: It is Wajib for any Mokallaf (the one of responsible age to perform religious duties in Islam) to put aside Zakatul-Fitrah for himself and all his dependents the night before Eidul-Fitr, even if he is not responsible to pay for their maintenance. And Mokallaf can pay his Zakatul-Fitrah to the poor from the first day of the Month of Ramadhan.
