Why helping others is so important in Islam?

SHAFAQNA – It is narrated that Imam Hassan Mojtaba (AS) was observing the period of I’tikaaf (an Islamic practice which include staying in a Mosque for a certain number of days, devoting oneself to worship of God) and went out to help a needy person. One of his companions asked: Have you forgotten that you are in I’tikaaf? Imam Hassan (AS) replied: I have not forgotten, but the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) said: The one who tries fulfilling the needs of his/her Muslim brethren, is like a person who has been fasting days and worshipping (God) at night for nine thousand years [1]. Also Abu Hamza (RA) narrated: I asked Imam Baqir (AS): What do you say if a Muslim is at his house and another Muslim come to his door and ask permission to enter, but that Muslim will not give him permission and does not receive him? Imam Baqir (AS) replied: O’ Abu Hamza, such a Muslim deserves to be cursed by God and this curse will continue until he meets with the Muslim who came to his door [2].
