Why in Islam it is necessary to protect the dignity of a believer?

SHAFAQNA – Protecting the dignity of others is a moral virtue. In Islam, protecting the dignity (of others) is so important that in some cases it is Wajib. Our Maraje (grand scholars) have issued Fatwas that no believer has the right to dishonour (discredit) himself/herself (or others). (A believer) has no right (in this case); it means it is Haram, and the believer must protect the dignity of himself/herself. We also have lots of narrations which say: The dignity does not belong to a believer in order to be able to dishonor himself/herself [1].
