WITHDRAWAL OF US TROOPS FROM AFGHANISTAN AFFECTS PEACE PROCESS IN KABUL

SHAFAQNA- Former NATO advisor in Afghanistan, Mohammad Shafiq Hamdam believes that President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the US troops has hit the peace process in Afghanistan.

Speaking with Mehr news agency, Hamdam said that despite the long-standing commitment of US financial, political and military cooperation, the decision to reduce its troops in Afghanistan is a matter of concern. Before reaching a peace deal, US troop withdrawals could suddenly unblock the Afghan peace process and security talks.

“If seven thousand US troops withdraw from Afghanistan by next summer, a big gap will emerge. Politicians in Washington are discussing options to fill such a gap, including the expansion of contracts for private-security firms and more assistance to Afghan security and defense forces,” he added.

He also explained the reasons behind re-election of Asadullah Khalid and Amrullah Saleh as to guarantee the continuation of power and the current system whenever possible, firstly, to establish a large coalition of anti-reconciliation with Taliban, secondly and to disrupt the peace process and direct talks between Taliban and US, thirdly.

“Saleh and Khalid are among the opponents of the current process of talks with Taliban; although they are not against peace, but they are completely opposed to the current style of the talks. It should be noted that these two new members of the cabinet of Afghanistan are also among the hard-fought opponents of Taliban and Pakistan,” Hamdam stressed.

Referring to the opposed position of President Ghani, Hamdam said “Afghan government supported direct talks between US and Taliban. The leadership of the national unity government, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah have repeatedly expressed their direct support for this trend, but the position of the President Ghani has changed, causing a dead end in the peace talks. This happened right after UAE summit, when Taliban representatives prevented to visit the Afghan delegation.
