Shafaqna English– The U.S. Treasury reported on Wednesday(19 Aug 2026) that the nation’s overall debt has crossed the $40 trillion threshold for the first time. The development prompted fresh alarms about a looming budget crisis, driven by rapidly escalating costs for social safety nets and debt servicing, while income streams remain suppressed due to earlier tax cuts.
The latest daily balance sheet from the Treasury Department put total gross debt at $40.047 trillion on Tuesday. Broken down, that amount consists of $32.266 trillion in marketable and non‑marketable securities held by private investors and foreign governments, plus $7.782 trillion owed to various federal trust funds and agencies.
