Shafaqna English– According to the UK’s official meteorological agency, the Met Office, the current El Niño event that is now developing is expected to reach unprecedented intensity, potentially breaking all historical records observed during the lifetimes of current generations.
El Niño represents a natural climatic oscillation in which surface waters of the eastern Pacific warm significantly due to diminished trade wind activity. This cycle repeats every two to seven years on average, with each event usually lasting from nine to twelve months, during which time global weather systems are significantly disrupted.
Because El Niño alters atmospheric circulation patterns on a planetary scale, its influence on regional weather systems can have devastating consequences for agricultural production worldwide, jeopardizing crop yields and threatening global food security.
