Shafaqna English– A stark disparity in food labeling between India and Europe highlights how multinational giants like Coca-Cola and Nestlé have resisted mandatory nutritional warnings on packaged products in India.
While the same beverage brand carries clear health warnings and colored labels in Europe, in India it only features small-print information on the back of the can. India’s food regulator abandoned a push for colorful front-of-pack warnings after a tense meeting with industry executives, instead proposing a black-and-white table for sugar, fat, and salt – a decision health activists deem inadequate.
Despite over 20 nations adopting interpretive color-coded labels, India remains under corporate pressure, with the Supreme Court now reviewing the policy. Experts warn that without greater labeling transparency, 450 million Indians could face obesity by 2050.
