Wave of patriotism sweeps across Canada

Shafaqna English– Diane Hosker has called Trump Avenue in Ottawa’s leafy west end home for more than 20 years—a street named during an era when Donald Trump was merely a New York property developer.

She never liked the name, and now, amid a deepening trade war and escalating threats from the US president, the city council is taking steps to change it.

Trump’s latest measures—imposing fresh tariffs on Canadian goods and issuing an order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America”—have provoked widespread anger and a pronounced rise in nationalist sentiment across Canada, a country more accustomed to a relaxed reputation.

Canadians have already begun boycotting US products and canceling trips south since Trump’s return to power in 2025, but his intensified rhetoric now risks creating a more permanent divide between the two historical allies.

From local streets to commercial supply chains and holiday plans, Canadians are rethinking and cutting ties that may persist long after the current trade conflict subsides.
