Shafaqna English- Just a few weeks have passed since xenophobic demonstrations compelled thousands of migrant laborers to flee South Africa. In the aftermath, a clothing factory located in Newcastle—an important industrial center in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal—now sits with long rows of unused sewing machines, silent and inactive.
The protest movement, spearheaded by the anti-foreigner group March and March, was aimed at creating employment opportunities for South African citizens, given that one out of every three locals is without a job. However, factory owners in the region have found it difficult to recruit replacements for the foreign workers who have departed.
