India: Reducing import reliance with green ammonia

Shafaqna English- The managing director of India’s state-owned Solar Energy Corporation revealed on Friday(7 Aug 2026) that the organization is aiming to deliver an additional 1 million metric tons per year of green ammonia produced within the country to fertilizer manufacturers. This effort comes as part of India’s ongoing push to reduce its reliance on imported materials for its agricultural sector.

The plan builds upon SECI’s March announcement, which confirmed that both fertilizer companies and domestic suppliers, including clean energy solutions provider ACME Cleantech and NTPC Green, had signed purchase agreements for 724,000 tons of green ammonia. This fuel, produced from green hydrogen, has the capacity to meet about one-third of the nation’s needs for low-carbon energy sources.
