The Parisian outfit, winners of the last two Champions League titles, opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a brilliant effort from Kvaratskhelia. However, Madjo found the equalizer in the dying moments of the first half.
Doue restored the French side’s lead in the 61st minute, and Villa—winners of the Europa League—could not find a second equalizer. The match was officiated by Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who had been unable to participate in the World Cup after being denied entry into the United States.
