Shafaqna English– Operations at Catania airport on the island of Sicily will be suspended through the early hours of Saturday(15 Aug 2026), as a result of ash clouds produced by Mount Etna’s persistent volcanic activity. Over the previous seven days, the ash fallout has caused extensive disruption, forcing airlines to cancel or reroute several hundred flights in and out of the busy airport.
In a late-night statement issued on Thursday, the airport’s managing company, SAC, announced that all inbound flights to the Sicilian hub will be halted until 2:00 a.m. local time (00:00 GMT) on August 15. The airport is ranked as Italy’s fifth-busiest in terms of passenger numbers, making the disruption particularly impactful for travelers across Europe and beyond.
