Shafaqna English- Nine newly appointed female health workers at a government-run hospital in Sri Lanka have filed a complaint with the nation’s human rights commission after they were prohibited from wearing the Muslim headscarf while on duty.
The women’s legal advisor, Attorney-at-Law Mubarack Azzam, told the media that the women filed five complaints with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka on Aug. 13, accusing the hospital of violating their fundamental right to practice their religion.
The Kalmunai North Base Hospital in the Ampara district of Eastern Province allegedly asked the women to remove their hijab, their religiously mandated head covering, before starting their shift on Aug. 10.
