Shafaqna English- The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is urging people to take steps to protect against West Nile virus.
The virus is transmitted to humans by native mosquitoes that have fed on infected birds, and while often asymptomatic, it can cause severe and sometimes fatal complications.
Italy, where West Nile virus is now circulating in 55 provinces across 16 regions, has been particularly hard hit, reporting seven virus-related deaths so far in 2026. Greece has recorded nine fatalities so far, all among adults aged 65 and older.
