Shafaqna English– In a statement on Monday(17 Aug 2026), Brazil’s Finance Minister Dario Durigan warned that the nation is approaching a “painful final mile” of fiscal restructuring, as policymakers seek to tackle the intertwined problems of sky-high interest rates, soaring government debt, and household financial leverage that has reached unprecedented levels. He emphasized that these structural weaknesses pose serious risks to the country’s long-term economic stability.
Speaking at a Santander Brasil-hosted gathering in São Paulo, the minister underscored the urgency of the situation, stating that the government must act quickly to resolve the fiscal imbalances. “Only after addressing these immediate challenges can we return to the table with a coherent vision for national development,” he added, framing the reforms as a prerequisite for long-term growth.
