Shafaqna English– The financial burden of Europe’s increasingly erratic weather patterns will inevitably fall on someone, and given that most of the associated economic losses remain uninsured, it will ultimately be the taxpayer who foots the bill—unless policymakers intervene swiftly with preventive measures.
The recent wildfires that ravaged southwestern Europe this year, along with the catastrophic floods that struck Spain in 2024 and Germany and its neighbouring countries in 2021, serve as stark reminders of how climate-related damages are compounding the existing pressures on Europe’s fiscal landscape—pressures that already stem from elevated defence expenditures and the mounting costs of supporting an ageing population.
