China imposes new safety rules via massive EV recall

Shafaqna English– The massive vehicle recall initiated in China last week directly targets an enduring anxiety among EV drivers – the risk of becoming locked inside their vehicles in the event of an electrical system failure.

Beyond that immediate safety concern, the move underscores Beijing’s growing role as a global frontrunner in formulating new regulatory benchmarks for the most technologically sophisticated automobiles on the market.

This action constitutes the largest automotive recall ever recorded in China, which is also the world’s largest car market. A total of nine manufacturers – among them Tesla, Xiaomi, and Leapmotor – have committed to repairing 4.3 million vehicles collectively.

The core issue prompting this sweeping measure is that interior emergency release mechanisms (buttons or levers) designed to let occupants manually unlatch the doors are often not intuitively located or easily identifiable in a crisis.
