Toxic sulfur odor returns to Baghdad

Shafaqna English- A sharp, sulfur-like smell reappeared overnight between Friday and Saturday, August 29, 2026, spreading across multiple residential neighbourhoods in Baghdad. This marks the latest in a series of toxic air pollution episodes that have raised serious public health concerns and prompted numerous complaints from residents.

The return of the sulfur plume occurs less than three weeks after a severe 48-hour outbreak of sulfur fumes affected southern and central Baghdad. The Green Iraq Observatory issued new warnings about untreated industrial emissions, unchecked open burning, and inadequate environmental oversight. Based on environmental assessments, the Green Iraq Observatory indicates that this recurrent pollution results from a combination of industrial activities and meteorological conditions.
