Shafaqna English– According to two Mexican government sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, this question has become a sticking point in U.S.-Mexico trade negotiations, as cheese diplomacy can be a sensitive matter no matter how you approach it.
Washington is opposing the Mexico-EU trade agreement, as it protects the names of European products linked to specific regions, such as Parmigiano Reggiano, feta, and manchego, and allows the EU to take legal action in case of violations.
The U.S. believes the May agreement will prevent American producers from selling cheeses labeled parmesan and feta in Mexico. The U.S. has consistently held that these names are generic, but the EU argues that parmesan should be exclusive to Parmigiano Reggiano from northern Italy and feta to specific Greek regions.
