Shafaqna English- The Bajrakli Mosque in the town of Peja is a living witness to Islamic civilization in Kosovo.
According to the Muslimsaroundtheworld website, Kosovo is a land where diverse civilizations, cultures and traditions have blended, forming a rich set of cultural heritage.
The Bajrakli Xhamia (Bajrakli Mosque) in the heart of Peja, with its more than 550 years of history, is one of the country’s most important Islamic monuments, having been an important center for the religious, cultural, and social life of the people of the region for more than five and a half centuries.
The function of the mosque was not limited to religious rituals; it was also intertwined with the daily life of the community, education, worship, and good deeds, ensuring its continued presence and connection with the history of the city and its local community over the generations.
Like many historical monuments in Kosovo, the mosque has gone through difficult times that have left their mark on its structure.
Evidence suggests that the mosque has been damaged by fire and various other events. It was also damaged during the Kosovo War between 1998 and 1999, and information suggests that the mosque was burned down in 1999 during the war.
After the war, the mosque underwent a restoration and conservation operation, in which the damaged parts, including the dome, minaret, and wall decorations, were restored while preserving its traditional architectural features.
The value of the building, which dates back to 1471, is further enhanced by its beautiful architecture, historical tombs, inscriptions, and decorations, as well as its ability to overcome damage and regain its place through restoration.
The Bajrakli Mosque embodies an important aspect of Muslim history in western Kosovo. It is a religious and architectural monument that has remained part of the city’s history for more than five and a half centuries.
