Overflow Risk Declines at China-Nepal Border Lake

Shafaqna English– The danger posed by a glacial-collapse lake near the China-Nepal border has eased, according to Chinese officials. The lake emerged after a glacier collapse in a region that suffered severe flooding earlier in the week.

Authorities believe the shrinking size of the lake is reducing the likelihood of a sudden breach, although the situation remains under close observation because additional flooding could pose serious risks to communities and rescue operations downstream.

Recent satellite imagery provides evidence that water levels in the glacial lake have been declining steadily. According to CCTV, which quoted the Water Resources Ministry, the lake stretches across Tibet and Nepal at the confluence of two rivers, while water has been gradually flowing out since Thursday.

This natural drainage is reducing the volume of water trapped in the reservoir and helping to ease concerns over a potentially destructive outburst flood.
