Shafaqna English– In August, British retailers implemented their most significant price increases in over two years. This upward adjustment was driven by two key factors: rising energy costs that elevated the price of certain processed food items, and the ongoing artificial intelligence boom, which has increased the cost of consumer electronics that rely on similar componentry.
The BRC’s shop price index climbed to a yearly figure of 1.5% in August, a notable jump from July’s 0.9%. The index has not been at this level since February 2024, highlighting a sustained upward trend in retail prices.
According to BRC Chief Executive Helen Dickinson, the rising costs of energy, inputs, and commodities are now making their way into retail prices. This is most noticeable for ambient foods — items that do not require refrigeration — as these are typically sourced from abroad and processed before sale.
She further noted that within the non-food sector, prices for electrical goods have increased as a result of the continuing artificial intelligence boom, which is driving up the costs of memory chips and data storage components.
