Dolphin typhoon closing in on Japan

Shafaqna English- Friday(7 Aug 2026) saw widespread disruption across southwestern Japan, where mandatory evacuation orders were issued for hundreds of thousands of people and more than 500 flights were cancelled. The measures came in response to the imminent threat posed by Typhoon Dolphin, a slow-moving weather system that was forecast to unleash fierce winds, exceptionally heavy precipitation, and towering waves as it drew closer to the archipelago.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the storm was a Category 1 typhoon, possessing maximum sustained winds of 144 kilometers per hour (89.5 mph) and gusting at speeds as high as 198 kph. It was gradually moving toward a string of islands that lies in the waters between Kyushu and Okinawa prefecture, raising concerns among local officials about potential structural damage and coastal flooding.
