The Holy Qur’an likewise calls upon believers to exercise diligence in receiving and transmitting information:
“O you who believe! If a wrongdoer brings you any news, verify it, lest you harm people out of ignorance and then become regretful for what you have done.” (Quran 49:6)
This noble verse embodies one of the most fundamental ethical principles of journalism and media practice: the obligation to verify information, seek the truth, and avoid haste in disseminating news. For this reason, a responsible journalist places accuracy above speed and regards the credibility of the media as an invaluable asset that cannot be compromised.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him), in one of his enduring maxims, likewise emphasizes discernment and responsibility in communication:
“Do not say what you do not know; rather, do not say everything that you do know.”
This profound wisdom offers an enduring lesson for media professionals. Journalism requires more than knowledge; it demands wisdom, sound judgment, a deep sense of responsibility, and careful consideration of the public interest.
