Shafaqna English- For decades, movies like “Jaws” and “Sharknado” have turned sharks into icons of summer terror. Yet, as a shark swims through the Atlantic off the U.S. East Coast, it may now serve a dual purpose: not only hunting prey but also gathering oceanographic data that could help researchers anticipate hurricane intensity prior to landfall.
Researchers at the University of Delaware are currently investigating whether sharks can function as mobile, near-real-time ocean-data collectors. By attaching sensors to these animals, they aim to measure various ocean conditions, which could then be integrated into oceanographic, atmospheric, and climate modeling systems.
