Shafaqna English- Henna Virkkunen, the European Union’s top technology official, announced on Monday(10 Aug 2026) that Meta and TikTok have both consented to implement fact‑checking procedures for content related to border crossings into Spain.
This decision comes in the wake of a sudden and massive surge of people attempting to enter Ceuta, a Spanish autonomous city located on the northern coast of Morocco. The agreement aims to address the proliferation of misleading information that has been circulating on these platforms regarding migration routes.
The EU tech chief took to X late Monday to announce that the fact‑checking partnership with Meta and TikTok is ultimately aimed at saving lives by undermining the business model of criminal syndicates that profit from migrant smuggling.
She pointed out that false information shared on these networks has directly contributed to tragic deaths, as desperate individuals have been persuaded to undertake perilous journeys based on unrealistic expectations.
The new measures are intended to ensure that any content presenting migration opportunities is subject to verification, thereby reducing the influence of malicious actors who exploit social media for illegal recruitment.
