Rail exports of Ukrainian grain via Moldova

Shafaqna English- Ukraine is weighing a strategic shift in its grain export logistics by considering a rail corridor through Moldova, according to officials from both nations who spoke on Monday(10 Aug 2026). The proposed route would bypass the perilous Black Sea maritime routes, which have been subjected to intensified Russian strikes against Ukrainian port facilities and vessels in recent weeks.

To ensure the viability of this plan, Ukrainian authorities have already reached out to their counterparts in Chisinau to request lower transit fees for grain shipments moving across the Moldovan railway system.

The Black Sea export corridor, which includes a designated “security lane” for Ukrainian grain shipments bound for Romania, has come under relentless Russian assault in the past few months. These attacks have not only damaged port infrastructure but also disrupted shipping operations, making the sea route highly unreliable.

The deteriorating security situation on the maritime front has consequently pushed Ukrainian planners to look for alternative pathways, with the rail route through Moldova emerging as a leading candidate to replace the increasingly vulnerable sea‑based export channel.
