Heavy rain trapped passengers at Tokyo airport

Shafaqna English- By Friday(14 Aug 2026) morning, a historic volume of rainfall had triggered widespread flooding in the vicinity of Tokyo’s Narita airport. The floodwaters overwhelmed roads and rail services, interrupted power supplies to homes, and tragically took at least four lives. As a direct outcome, thousands of travellers found themselves marooned at the terminal.

Within a single 24‑hour period, certain areas of Chiba Prefecture – the prefecture neighbouring Tokyo – received over 360 mm of precipitation. This deluge submerged both roadways and railway lines, while also cutting electricity to approximately 25,000 homes. Critically, this disaster coincided with one of Japan’s peak travel periods, the holiday week when movement is at its highest.
