Shafaqna English- More than 650,000 refugees and asylum seekers in South Sudan are at risk of losing access to essential food, nutrition, and other assistance due to critical funding shortfalls. This situation leaves families who have fled war and hunger with nowhere to turn, as warned today by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
Without immediate and urgent funding, the final food and nutrition assistance for the most vulnerable 240,000 refugees will be provided in September, effectively cutting off a lifeline for hundreds of thousands already living in precarious conditions. These 240,000 are the last remaining refugees of the 650,000 who have been receiving food support across the country. If critical aid is interrupted, hundreds of thousands of refugee families will face immediate and long-lasting consequences, including increased risks of malnutrition and exploitation, particularly for women and children. UNHCR is especially concerned about the possibility of more cross-border movement as people search for food and assistance.
