Rhine River still gripped by drought crisis

Shafaqna English– Data published by the federal waterways authority on Wednesday(19 Aug 2026) indicates that water levels along the Rhine have inched upward since the start of the week, offering a glimmer of hope to shippers and factory managers.

Yet any optimism is tempered by the sobering reality that the river remains fractionally above the all-time lows recorded during previous drought episodes. The lingering shallowness continues to constrain the passage of fully laden cargo vessels, leading to delays in coal, chemical, and grain deliveries, which in turn forces power generators and manufacturing plants to operate below capacity or seek costlier overland alternatives.
