Shafaqna English– On Saturday(22 Aug 2026), the United States announced the imposition of 50% tariffs on a selection of Canadian products, following the collapse of trade negotiations between the two historically close allies.
Both nations quickly traded blame, with each side accusing the other of obstructing and undermining the lengthy talks that had spanned several days.
The tariffs, which took effect shortly after midnight (0400 GMT), are applied to approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including items such as wooden ice hockey sticks—products that have largely fallen out of common use.
Despite the high tariff rate, the measure is unlikely to significantly impact the broader economic relationship with Canada, which remains the United States’ second-largest trading partner after Mexico. The affected goods account for just over 5% of Canada’s total exports to the U.S.
