Shafaqna English– On Saturday(22 Aug 2026), the head of the EU delegation to Belgrade announced that the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism has deployed helicopters and firefighting personnel to assist Serbia in combating a major wildfire that has been raging through a protected nature reserve located in the country’s northeastern region.
This emergency response underscores the EU’s commitment to supporting member and candidate nations during environmental crises that threaten critical ecosystems.
Serbia formally requested the activation of the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism on Friday, following weeks of relentless firefighting efforts to contain a blaze in Deliblatska Pescara, a distinctive natural area characterized by its rare combination of sandy dunes and forested land, situated approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of the capital, Belgrade.
Additionally, authorities have been grappling with separate fire outbreaks in the southwestern part of the country, stretching local resources to their limits.
