Shafaqna English– Sunday’s(23 Aug 2026) landslide at a rubbish tip in Guinea’s capital, caused by torrential overnight rains, sent a mountain of garbage cascading onto neighboring encampments, killing 30 people, authorities said.
This disaster came just under a week after the government had revealed intentions to shut down the facility and move the rubbish elsewhere, citing the dangers it presented—particularly during the current rainy period, which annually triggers earth slips and deadly sudden floods in densely populated, impoverished urban areas throughout much of West Africa.
